New Delhi –
“Indian Railways’ 48-city plan aims to reshape passenger movement by 2030.”
In order to satisfy growing passenger demand, urban congestion, and long-term mobility demands throughout India, Indian Railways has launched an ambitious plan to increase originating train capacity in 48 major cities by 2030. The program focuses on cities, especially those in metropolitan and fast-growth urban areas, that are now under a lot of strain due to high passenger numbers, restricted terminal capacity, and infrastructure bottlenecks.
The plan calls for a complete overhaul of the railway infrastructure, which includes building new originating stations on the outskirts of cities, expanding and renovating existing terminals, and adding new lines, platforms, and stabling facilities. Indian Railways hopes to cut turnaround time, increase punctuality, and lessen operational strain at important intersections by expanding the number of trains that can originate rather than just transit through crowded hubs.

Modern signaling and network decongestion are important pillars of the strategy. In order to increase train frequency without sacrificing safety, Indian Railways is expediting the implementation of sophisticated signaling technologies including electronic interlocking and autonomous block signaling. Additionally, if practical, the plan calls for the targeted doubling, tripling, and segregation of freight, long-distance, and suburban traffic.
“The initiative will be rolled out nationwide in a phased manner to improve rail capacity and passenger convenience.”

Another crucial element is rolling stock increase. In order to ensure that capacity growth is matched by increased speed, comfort, and energy efficiency, the Railways intends to implement more contemporary passenger coaches, Vande Bharat trainsets, and modernized locomotives. To accommodate increased originating volumes, these 48 locations will also update their maintenance depots and coaching facilities.
The capacity expansion is in line with more general national goals such regional connection, economic growth, and improved urban transportation. Indian Railways hopes to improve last-mile connectivity, assist everyday commuters, and lessen congestion on well-traveled routes by expanding the number of trains departing from key cities, particularly during periods of high travel demand.
According to officials, the plan would be carried out in stages, with priority determined by operational viability, passenger demand, and city growth forecasts. The project is anticipated to drastically alter India’s passenger rail system once it is finished, improving train travel’s dependability, accessibility, and scalability during the following ten years.
