Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has revealed that construction on a second Mumbai–Pune Expressway will commence shortly, providing much-needed relief to those who travel along one of Maharashtra’s most crowded routes.
The current expressway frequently experiences significant traffic jams, particularly on weekends and during holidays. The anticipated new corridor is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and deliver a more efficient and quicker travel experience between Mumbai and Pune.

As per Gadkari, the initial phase of the project — extending from Pagote (close to JNPA) to Chowk (Panvel) — has received approval.
Speaking about the project, Gadkari said,
“The travel time between Mumbai and Pune will come down to one-and-a-half hours.”
The new expressway is set to be a contemporary, high-capacity roadway aimed at enhancing both safety and efficiency. It will facilitate smoother transportation of goods, benefiting industries and businesses that rely on quick road connections between the two cities.
In addition to alleviating everyday travel, the initiative is anticipated to bolster regional development by enhancing access to industrial areas, ports, and major commercial centers in Maharashtra.
Although specific timelines and route plans have yet to be disclosed, the announcement highlights the government’s ongoing commitment to upgrading road infrastructure and tackling congestion on vital transport routes.
Upon completion, the second Mumbai–Pune Expressway is projected to greatly enhance connectivity, minimize travel-related stress, and promote sustainable economic growth within the region.
