KYV Process for FASTag Comes to an End

“Drive through, no KYV: Toll payments made easier.”

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) recently announced that all new FASTag issuances for automobiles, jeeps, and vans will no longer require the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process from February 1, 2026. This move is intended to streamline the FASTag activation procedure and reduce delays for car owners who regularly received additional verification requests following FASTag activation.

Why KYV was introduced, and why it is being removed.

The KYV process was initially intended as a post-activation verification to guarantee that each FASTag was appropriately linked to the owner’s vehicle. While the objective was to improve security and accuracy, KYV resulted in user complaints because many motorists had to submit their car documentation many times, causing irritation and delays.

By eliminating this phase, NHAI ensures that vehicle details are validated upfront, allowing FASTags to be activated faster and more easily.

The New Verification Procedure’s Operation

As per the revised guidelines:

  • Banks that issue FASTags will use the VAHAN database to verify vehicle information prior to activation.
  • Before activation, banks will use the Registration Certificate (RC) to confirm details if the VAHAN database does not contain the vehicle information.
  • Online and offline FASTag applications will follow the same pre-verification guidelines, making the procedure easier for all new car owners.
The KYV procedure will only be used in extraordinary circumstances, such as complaints, faulty issuance, or suspected misuse, for FASTags that were already issued prior to February 1, 2026.

This change is expected to benefit millions of car, jeep, and van owners, as the updated process eliminates unnecessary paperwork and delays. FASTag activation will now be more efficient and straightforward, enabling vehicle owners to drive through toll plazas seamlessly without waiting for post-activation verification.

Officials from NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways describe this step as part of a broader effort to make India’s tolling system more transparent, technology-driven, and citizen-friendly.

With the KYV process removed for all new car FASTags, NHAI has taken a welcome step towards modernizing toll payments and ensuring a smoother travel experience for motorists. This change not only reduces administrative hurdles but also reflects the authority’s commitment to hassle-free, fast, and reliable highway travel.
